At the crossroads of the second floor at New Beginnings Family Academy is a map of the United States.
In 2017, the fourth-grade was studying a unit on the United States of America. Teachers approached NBFA’s Art Teacher Mrs. DeVito about creating a visual learning tool and from there the map came into life.
Unlike most of the many other murals in the school, Mrs. DeVito painted this one alone. Teachers used the map to help students visualize their learning and Music Teacher Mr. Kelliher provided the song “Fifty Nifty United States” to further reinforce the learning. In 2018 the entire fifth grade learned the song.
This map led to the next mural project at NBFA: the map of the continents on the first floor of the school. We will tell you more about that one next month.
