April 19, 2020 - The Water Fireworks Science Experiment - A New Choice Board Activity!
Hello Everyone!
Uploaded Apr 19, 2020
Harlow and I decided to try this new water fireworks experiment and record our results for you. We are currently working on a 3-D volcano replica of Moana Loa located in Hawaii, the worlds most active Volcano. Does the name of the Volcano sound familiar? We will videotape and share the results with you soon!
I hope everyone is well. Please continue to do your work in your notebook, read your books, and try out these experiments. I'm really looking forward to getting to see some family recipes and pictures of your creations!
Wishing you all well!

Water Fireworks Experiment
Materials:
Water
Oil
Food Coloring (Any color of your choosing)
16 oz clear glass
Another 16 oz clear glass
A Fork
Instructions:
1. Fill the tall glass almost to the top with room-temperature water.
2. Pour 2 tablespoons of oil into the other glass.
3. Add 2 drops of food coloring to the glass with the oil.
4. Stir the oil into the food coloring using a fork.
5. Pour the oil and coloring mixture into the tall glass.
Now watch! The food coloring will slowly sink in the glass,...
How it Works:
If you put oil and water in a container, the water molecules will bunch up together and the oil molecules will bunch up together, forming two distinct layers. To get around the propensity of oil and water molecules to only pal around with each other, you'll have to make an emulsion, dispersing one of the liquids in the other. Food coloring dissolves in water, but not in oil. So when you pour in your food coloring/oil mixture the oil will float at the top of the water because it is less dense, and the food coloring will begin to dissolve once they sink through the oil and into the water.
Are you a Rockstar?
Try doing it without the oil and observe and record how the results are different.
Try using a larger glass, does it change the results? -
COVID 19 (milk) vs. Soap Science Experiment
Happy Friday 6H!
Uploaded May 01, 2020
Harlow, Clementine and I completed an experiment to demonstrate how soap can break down the Corona Virus. You only need a little milk, food coloring and a dash of dish soap! Viruses can be active outside the body for hours, even days. Disinfectants, liquids, wipes, gels and creams containing alcohol are all useful at getting rid of them, but they are not quite as good as normal soap and water. So why does soap work so well on the coronavirus? The virus has a weak link called it's lipid or fatty bilayer. Just like it attacks the fat in the milk, soap attacks the virus's fat membrane and the virus falls apart like a house of cards and dies. The soap not only loosens the “glue” between the virus and the skin but also the molecules that hold the virus together!
Have a great weekend and be safe,
